Verdunkeln is a band about which very little is known.
Both members Gnarl and Hiemos also play in Graupel; a German Raw Black metal band; Verdunkeln has no official website; and it’s released their amazing debut album (following their impressive demo) Einblick In Den Qualenfall 5 years ago. After that, however, things became awfully quiet again. Leading to numerous people believing that they had actually broken up. That, thankfully, is not the case though! Verdunkeln is back, ready to tour Europe, and will be releasing a new album in little less...
Not quite at home in the pagan metal world, nor exactly ‘all there’ when it comes to progressive black metal. Melodic metal does not quite cut it either, perhaps slightly neo-classical black metal would be in order because of the contemporary classic influences in between the metal violence…? Whatever you wish to make of German Fjoergyn, they are by no means easily defined.

As such, I would like to introduce Lotsajoy....
As I mentioned before, when browsing through Bandcamp, one can come across some of the most interesting of young bands. This is exactly how I found out about Oskoreien, a young atmospheric black metal act whose 2011 release ended up being one of my favourites of that year, Wilds forlorn and Aquilus are on it too, and even John Haugm (you know.. the vocalist and guitar player of Agalloch?) has taken to this medium to release his solo electronic/ambient project.
One of my most recent finds...
Adding classical elements to your music is an incredibly hard thing to do without ending up sounding like any other over-the-top bombastic symphonic metal band (Dimmu Borgir, any one?), but Aquilus manages to do it. They first appeared on my radar when I found the song Harrowing Duskfall on Youtube, about three years ago. Beautiful atmosphere, convincing vocals, production was just gritty enough, and the song’s composition really captivated me. For some reason I forgot all about this act and went on until just two measly days ago when I read, somewhere,...
